Somalia: Farmajo’s Cabinet List [Intelligence Brief #2]

On November 2, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmajo), the newly confirmed prime minister of Somalia’s internationally recognized Transitional Federal Government (T.F.G.), announced the list of nominees for his cabinet, which must now face a confirmation vote by the country’s transitional parliament.

Given the hyper-fragmented configuration of contemporary Somali politics, both within and outside the T.F.G., it is to be expected and is the case that Farmajo’s proposed cabinet is a disparate coalition containing diverse and even seemingly incompatible interests within it. In that respect, it is similar to the three preceding governments since the founding of the T.F.G. in 2004, those led by Ali Mohamed Gedi, Nur Adde Hassan Hussein, and Umar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke. In contrast to its predecessors, however, Farmajo’s government breaks with the past composition of players and registers a shift in the balance of power.
